While Access databases can be encrypted, they do not benefit from the same level of security available to SQL Server and SQL Azure. If data security is important, then a SQL Server solution is the safer choice.
Access data integrity and recovery is not as robust as SQL Server which features transaction logs. Due to the nature of Access databases and their portability, Access databases may become corrupt unlike a properly maintained SQL Server.
Access databases require that no transactions be underway during backup. This can be a major problem if the database is central to the business and in regular use. The administrative tools that are available with SQL Server offer scheduled backups to be automatically run at any time, even when highly active.
If you need to know who modified the data and undo changes, use SQL Server’s built-in features and triggers. Access does not feature rollbacks after a transaction is committed.
While Access databases pass entire tables of data across the network, SQL Server significantly improves performance by only passing the requested data and independently completing all operations.
Microsoft Access is not a feasible enterprise-level data storage solution. In a real world environment, it is common to experience major performance problems with as few as 20 users.
Stillwell-Hansen, a leading manufacturers’ representative that specializes in heating and air conditioning, has been reliant on the same core application to manage its sales and service orders since the late 1990s. Once the platform reached the end of its support lifecycle, the team knew they needed a better, more forward-looking solution to run the business.
Stillwell-Hansen’s existing software touched every aspect of the business from tracking orders and sales to managing technician schedules, so it was crucial that DOOR3 take the needs of a diverse range of users into account.
At the same time, any solution needed to feel familiar and comfortable to employees that had been using the legacy system, some for over 20 years, and didn’t have time for the lengthy training and steep learning curve that can come with completely new software.
Beyond integrating existing critical functionality, we examined how teams were working outside the application and how that work could be incorporated and streamlined to encourage adoption across the organization.
While Stillwell-Hansen had previously relied on Microsoft Access, DOOR3 updated the platform by moving it to a modern, web-based model.
Even better, as DOOR3 coordinated the phased rollout of the new application, we ensured that orders created during that process fed immediately into the new system, ensuring a smooth transition from the old.
Now, all the company’s functions are centralized in a single, intuitive platform that vastly improves visibility and reporting abilities.
